We can help reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer
Thank you for your participation. The answer is TRUE!

Although prostate cancer is a somewhat complex disease, it seems that having good nutrition, a healthy weight, physical activities (30 min./day or 150 min./week), a healthy lifestyle in summary, may possibly reduce the incidence of prostate cancer, slow its progression and help with some of the side effects of treatment.

Anti-cancer foods? We know that men in Western countries, such as in North America, are more likely to have prostate cancer than men in East Asian countries such as China and Japan. Asian men who have lived in North America for at least a generation are at the same risk as native North Americans.

This may be due to the Western diet, which contains less fruit, vegetables and fish, and more meat, dairy, sugar, fat and processed foods. There are many studies going on that are trying to better understand the link between diet and prostate cancer.

Black men are 2 x more at risk of developing it than white men
Thank you for your participation. The answer is TRUE!

Men of African descent are more likely to be diagnosed at a younger age than white men. The tumor tends to be more aggressive and to be diagnosed at a more advanced stage. Although scientists don’t know exactly why, this risk may be associated with differences in diet, including vitamin D intake, or hormone levels. Research is also underway to determine if one or more genes specific to this population could be responsible.

Which of these statements is false?
Thank you for your participation. The answer is A!

A – My father had prostate cancer, so I’m expecting a diagnosis at one point as well
B – The risk is higher after the age of 50 and at the age of 45 if there is a risk factor
C – The frequency of sexual activity with ejaculation can have a protective effect against cancer
D – Vasectomy does not increase the risk of cancer of the prostate

Men who have cases of prostate cancer in their families are more exposed to it than others, and, in general, cancer may start a little earlier at home. However, it has been established that this familial predisposition is only involved in approximately 15% of prostate cancer cases.

If you have parents with prostate, breast or ovarian cancer, and are concerned about your risk, talk to your doctor or contact one of our healthcare providers. Although the risk of prostate cancer may be higher, it does not mean that you will develop one.

Enlarged prostate or BPH can lead to prostate cancer
Thank you for your participation. The answer is FALSE!

A large prostate (or enlarged prostate) is completely benign. BPH is not a precursor of prostate cancer. In addition to BPH, other prostate problems have nothing to do with cancer, such as acute prostatitis.

Which of these factors can help prevent prostate cancer that is more advanced in diagnosis?
Thank you for your participation. The answer is B.

A – Taking vitamin E supplements
B – Losing weight and maintain a healthy weight
C – Taking Viagra
D – Taking natural health products sold on the internet
E – None of these answers

Several studies show that men who are overweight or obese are more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer that is advanced or that has already spread (metastases) to other parts of the body. Obesity seems to lower the level of testosterone in these men and consequently their PSA level at screening, thus giving a false reading of the real rate.

Losing weight and keeping it off can not only reduce your risk of advanced cancer when diagnosed, and may even reduce your risk of developing prostate cancer altogether.
