Foods that irritate your bladder

Do you have urinary symptoms that affect you on a daily basis? The article Foods that irritate your bladder is for you. We know that the prescription of certain medications can promote urinary incontinence in some people. The side effects of these drugs are sometimes temporary, but it is important to talk to your doctor about them.

But what about food?

For starters, knowing that being overweight promotes increased abdominal pressure on the bladder, exercise and a heart-healthy diet can help manage your weight, which is great for your prostate. Exercise also helps your bladder empty at a normal rate and promotes bowel movement, which helps prevent constipation.

That said, certain foods can irritate and stimulate the bladder:

  • Limit the amount of caffeine and alcohol you consume. Alcohol increases the volume of urine and reduces the feeling of wanting to urinate. For its part, coffee and other products containing caffeine can give symptoms of overactive bladder (increased urinary frequency, urgent desire to urinate, etc.).
  • Review all the foods and beverages you consume on a daily basis, as some can irritate your bladder. In addition to caffeine and alcohol, chocolate, citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruit, lemons, tangerine, etc.), consumed whole or in the form of juice, sweet drinks or drinks containing sugar substitutes, spicy foods are among the products likely to cause urinary symptoms in some people.
  • Make sure you’re well hydrated too (1.5 to 2 liters a day), but reduce the amount of fluids you drink in the evening, especially before going to bed.

And don’t wait to see a doctor if your urinary symptoms persist!
