Prostate cancer: facing your diagnosis

Being diagnosed with prostate cancer is a stressful event that often leads to feelings of helplessness, hopelessness and uncertainty about the future. Facing your diagnosis can provoke strong emotional reactions, such as fear, a feeling of loneliness and loss of control over your life. This is all normal!

But… where to start?

Once the dust settles, the best remedy for the anxiety of such a diagnosis is information. The more informed you are about the disease, treatment options and side effects, the easier it will be for your urologist to guide you in your choice of treatment.

Be aware that prostate cancer can be classified according to its risk of progression or recurrence. This assessment, which may influence the treatment approach, takes into account the clinical stage, PSA level and Gleason score. For example, your doctor may suggest more aggressive treatment if your risk of recurrence is high. On the other hand, if your risk of progression is low, you may be offered active monitoring without immediate treatment.

That said, make sure you take the time necessary for gathering information. This collection begins by understanding your biopsy report and what the numbers mean.

Express your emotions and needs

Of course, each case is unique and each person reacts differently to stressful situations. Accepting this new reality — prostate cancer — is an important first step in planning how you will deal with the challenges of your situation.

Here are some ways to help you cope with prostate cancer

  1. Seek support: family members, close friends, colleagues you trust; note that our nurses are here to support and help you.
  2. Do not be afraid to ask your doctor questions: prepare a list of questions on paper so as not to forget them, otherwise, contact us so that we can guide you.
  3. Preserve your self-esteem: live from day to day, maintain a positive attitude, remain optimistic and imagine realistic goals that will give meaning to your life.

And remember that there is no right or wrong way to talk about your cancer! If you have any tips that you would like to share with other men in the same situation as you, feel free to let them know by leaving a comment that we will publish.
